The Irish Film Institute is presenting a season of classic political thrillers titled Trust No One this May.

In the United States, the countercultural idealism of the 1960s politics developed into something darker and more cynical as the decade ended.

Nowhere was this represented more grievously than the events at Watergate Hotel, the cover-up that followed it, and the lengthy political wrangling that followed for years before President Richard Nixon finally realised his goose was cooked and resigned – only to be immediately pardoned by his successor Gerald Ford.

Throughout the 1970s, this sense infiltrated both Hollywood and European cinema and the inspired a whole genre of movies that were soaked in paranoia, cynicism, and despair, as heroes (or anti-heroes) tried to uncover the work of shady forces.

In the era of so-called fake news, perpetual digital espionage, and crumbling trust in political power structures the world around, as well as the re-heightening of Cold War tensions, Trust No One will provide pertinent viewing.

Amongst the films featured in the programme are The Day of the Jackal, The Parallax View, Three Days of the Condor and Z. Films are screening each Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday until the end of May.
