Country music legend, star of The Wire, and social and political activist Steve Earle has been getting back to basics, musically speaking, on his most recent record, 2017’s So You Wannabe An Outlaw.

Country music legend, star of The Wire, and social and political activist Steve Earle has been getting back to basics, musically speaking, on his most recent record, 2017’s So You Wannabe An Outlaw.

In the 1970s, a bunch of country and western singers including Willie Nelson, and Johnny Paycheck, but particularly Waylon Jennings, started making a brand of country music that was heavily inspired by the rebelliousness and contempt for conformity that rock’n’roll had exhibited for the previous decade.

Jennings’ Honky Tonk Heroes in 1972 set down a benchmark for this subgenre. Earle, along with his long-time backing band The Dukes, has mined that outlaw heritage, as well as Earle’s own Texan roots in his most recent work.

While writing The Galway Girl probably didn’t hurt his popularity in this country, Earle has long held sway over Irish audiences and this is a much anticipated return to Dublin.
