Dún an Óir, or the Fort of Gold, can be found on a rock promontory in County Kerry, not far from Ballyferriter Village. It is the location of an infamous massacre of Irish, Spanish and Italian soldiers during the Second Desmond Rebellion.

Visitors can find the historic site of Dún an Óir, or the Fort of Gold, on a rock promontory of Smerwick Harbour, which is north of Ballyferriter Village in County Kerry.

In 1580, during the Second Desmond Rebellion, the fort bore witness to a terrible massacre. A coalition of 600 Irish, Spanish and Italian soldiers were brutally killed after three days of battle with Lord Grey’s troops.

In 1980, a commemorative monument was erected.
