West Cork Coastal / Mizen Tour

This tour from Cork City follows the southern coastline to where West Cork reaches out into the Atlantic. From Cork City take the road to Kinsale, a beautiful fishing harbour. From Kinsale continue to Timoleague. Visit the charming villages of Rosscarbery, Glandore, Union Hall and Castletownshend, set in picturesque surroundings. A must see is the Drombeg Stone Circle a stone circle of 17 standing stones dated to between 153 BC and 127AD. Continue to Skibbereen and take time to visit the Skibbereen Heritage Centre in the beautifully restored Old Gasworks Building on the banks of the River Ilen. Visit the fishing village of Baltimore which is the gateway for boat trips to the islands including Cape Clear Island (Oilean Chleire), Sherkin Island and Heir Island. Next to Ballydehob with its graceful twelve arch railway bridge. Continuing onwards through Ballydehob, one reaches Schull. From here the mood changes, as one strikes out the peninsula to where the Atlantic rages. Goleen, Barleycove and Crookhaven take their colour from French and Spanish fishermen. But at the Mizen Head, the extreme south-west point of Ireland, one can stand on cliffs that ignore the ceaseless pounding of the Atlantic. Take time to visit the Mizen Head Signal Station Visitor Centre A final spice to this tour can be had by a circular return to Schull skirting Mount Gabriel, which takes in the serene majesty of Dunmanus Bay.
