Travel tips - using Dublin Bikes.

Dublin has responded to chronic traffic issues with the introduction of the Dublin Bikes Scheme which was launched in September 2009. Commuting within the city has been much easier with the installation of bike stations all around the city centre. Using Dublin Bikes is particularly convenient for visitors who would like to see the sights at their leisure and yet save their feet. The bikes themselves are designed specifically for the city and are comfortable, with a convenient basket to the front. The bikes all look the same with a distinctive blue colouring.

How does it work?
Using the scheme is simple and affordable. Just log onto www.dublinbikes.ie to get your card. Users should note that a deposit/guarantee of €150 will be required in the event of the bike being damaged or not returned to a station. The really good news for would-be bike user is that the first 30 minutes is free on any of the Dublin bikes.

Where can I get one?
There are 40 Dublin Bike stations placed around the city centre and they are all placed fairly close together making short hops much easier. Each station has a minimum of 15 stands and terminals to facilitate both long-term and 3-day ticket users. To see a map and listing of exact Dublin Bike locations around Dublin city, log onto www.dublinbikes.ie/stations.

How Much?
The number of bike users in Dublin has increased dramatically in recent years in response to ever-lengthening traffic jams in the city centre and commuting by bike can work out a lot cheaper than travelling by car or tram. The price breaks down as 50 cent for one hour, €1.50 for 2 hours, €3.50 for 3 hours, €6.50 for 4 hours and €2 for every extra half an hour. Don't forget that the first 30 minutes on any Dublin Bike is free!

It's also a fantastic way to see the capital...
