Brazilian composer and multi- instrumentalist Antonio Pinto (City of God, Lord of War, Collateral) moves to the forefront of international film composers with this superb new score, composed for Mike Newell's film of Gabriel García Marquez' luminous novel. Pinto combines sinuous melodic lines and taut percussion with eclectic instrumentation (marimba, viola, cavaquinho), and spare orchestration to create an unusually evocative and haunting score. Featuring three original songs performed with breathy brio by Shakira (the aching Despedida and the playful Hay Amores are co-written by the Colombian popstrel with Pinto), Love in the Time of Cholera is a career best. www.loveinthetime.com JOCELYN CLARKE
