Scrubbing Up
Eight of the best exfoliating cleansers
With dermatologists frequently telling us how important exfoliation is, we have become a nation of scrubbers and polishers.
But with frequent use, it’s important to use gentle products. The rule of thumb is that more aggressive exfoliation is best for younger skin types and more emollition is needed as the skin ages, but with so many options out there it’s hard to know which one to choose.
We have a guide to eight of the best.
Botanics Purifying Face Scrub for Normal or Oily Skin (€5.79)
This maybe one of the most inexpensive on our list, but is by no means the least impressive. Gentle on the skin and with the added ingredient of Quillaja (an extract from the soap bark tree) it draws out impurities and leaves skin refreshed. Available from Boots Chemists. boots.com
Elemis Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Face Wash (€38)
This daily face wash stimulates the skin's natural cell renewal cycle, smooths and refines, whilst sloughing away dead skin cells which dull the complexion. The key though is that it replenishes essential moisturising oils lost due to the daily washing. elemis.com
Clinique’s Exfoliating Scrub (€23.00)
For skins that tend to be quite oily, this is a good choice. It deflakes, de-oils, refreshes and resurfaces skin while taking the edge off tiny wrinkles and stimulating cell renewal. A real smoothie. €23.00 from Clinique counters.
Vichy Purete Thermale Detoxifying Exfoliating Cream (€14.50)
Though Vichy have a few exfoliators to choose from, we like this cream which does the job without dehydrating the skin. The concentration of grains leaves the skin cleansed and smooth. vichy.ie
Dr Hauschka’s Cleansing Cream (€15.25)
If the idea of exfoliating gives you a rash, than Dr Hauschka’s Cleansing Cream (€15.25) is a great place to start. Combining sweet almond meal, St. John’s Wort and chamomile extracts; the cleanser clarifies your skin while reducing inflammation and redness. We love the smooth soft results. Perfect for more sensitive types. Stockist information available at drhauschka.ie
L’Occitane Immortelle Brightening Smoothing Exfoliator (€31.95)
This exfoliator is for those looking to combine some anti-ageing and skin perfecting properties and contains natural micro-granules (pumice stone, cellulose) for deep exfoliation. It is also enriched with organic immortelle essential oil and mulberry extract to brighten the complexion. From L’Occitane outlets and selected pharmacies.
Clarins One Step Gentle Exfoliator (€28.13)
A little detox in a tube, this foaming cleanser/exfoliator/toner combo is a great pick- me-up for your skin. The deep cleansing formula purifies the complexion and the orange extract gives a polished, brightened look.
Origins Modern Fiction (€42.50)
Featuring Rice Starch cushioned in a creamy buffing paste, Origins Modern Friction is a one-step exfoliant that gets cell turnover going. It takes the dirt and oil off, without leaving any redness or flaking, and gives a good polished finish to the skin. €42.50 for net wt. 7.5 oz. / 250 ml from Origins. origins.co.uk
