One To Watch: Zoolander

Ben Stiller as Derek Zoolander

What male model Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) lacks in intelligence, he makes up for by being really, really, ridiculously good looking and striking his signature Blue Steel pose on the runway. However, after an illustrious career on the catwalk, Derek seems to have been knocked off his pedestal by up-and-coming model Hansel (Owen Wilson), a hippy with golden locks and twinkling aqua eyes. Things are set to get much worse, though, when Derek is recruited for a big show, where he will be secretly brainwashed to kill the Malaysian Prime Minster by sinister designer Mugatu (Will Ferrell), and begins to fall for nosey reporter Matilda Jefferies (Christine Taylor) who tries to help him expose the seedy underworld of international modelling. This hilarious parody on the fragile fashion industry and its faithful followers is a definite must see for fans of Stiller and laugh-out-loud comedies.

Watch Out:

For good on-screen chemistry. Co-writer and director Ben Stiller revealed that he wrote the part of Hansel particularly for Owen Wilson and would not consider any other actor for the part. The pair have starred together on several film projects, including Meet the Parents, Starsky & Hutch, Night at the Museum and The Royal Tenenbaums. Wilson reportedly had to wear a wig for the duration of filming as he was working on Behind Enemy Lines simultaneously and had to maintain a crew-cut for the role.

Say What?

The Hollywood Reporter said this of the film: "During its fleeting moments onscreen, the movie's light-hearted spirit and comic energy make for entertaining, escapist fare."

When and Where?

Zoolander is at 9pm on Film4.
