Movie Preview: Away From Her

Julie Christie

Year: 2006 Featuring: Gordon Pinsent, Julie Christie, Olympia Dukakis and Alberta Watson Rating: 3/5

The Plot: The marriage of sixty-something retired couple Grant (Pinsent) and Fiona (Christie) Anderson is torn apart when Fiona begins to suffer from Alzheimer's disease and, after being admitted to a nursing home, is soon unable to even recognise her husband. Instead, Fiona falls in love with a fellow patient, Aubrey, a wheelchair-bound mute, much to Grant's dismay. However, when his wife is separated from her new love interest, Grant makes the ultimate sacrifice by fighting for the pair to be together, meeting and developing feelings for Aubrey's wife, Marian (Dukakis), in the process.

Extras: Writer and director Sarah Polley won herself an Academy Award nomination for her adaptation of Alice Munro's short story, The Bear Came Over the Mountain. She is said to have moulded the work especially to suit actress Julie Christie, who she had starred alongside in The Secret Life of Words in 2005. Christie in turn earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her part in the project.

Our Opinion: A heartfelt drama with strong performances by a talented cast, especially leading lady, Julie Christie.

When and Where: 10.05pm on RTE1.
