Best of the Rest: Flags of Our Fathers
This World War Two action drama from legendary filmmaker Clint Eastwood tells the story surrounding the raising of the American flag on Japanese soil during the battle on the island of Iwo Jima. Only three soldiers survive the iconic moment - which is forever immortalised in a now-famous photograph - John 'Doc' Bradley (Ryan Phillippe), Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford) and Ira Hayes (Adam Beach). As they return home heroes, the trio struggle to come to terms with the crippling survivors guilt they suffer, especially when they are forced to lie about the identities of their fellow fighters in the image.
A moving war film, which earned two Academy Award nominations of the 2007 ceremony, including Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Eastwood also received a Best Director nomination at the Golden Globes in the same year, but lost out to Martin Scorsese for his project, The Departed. An interesting watch, particularly for fans of historical dramas and Eastwood's recognisable style.
