Armstrong almost there
Lance Armstrong won the 19th stage of the Tour de France today; a 58.5km time trial between Freiburg and Mulhouse. Defending champion Armstrong retains the yellow jersey of overall race leader with just two stages remaining after finishing in 1hr 05min 01sec.

Lance Armstrong, the yellow jersey - and winner of all three time trials in last year's Tour - said his focus for the Sydney Olympics (in 2 months' time) will be the time trial. "I know I can train specifically for the time trial," he said last night. "The road race is much more of a lottery, so the time trial will be my main goal in Sydney."

12.31 2001 Tour - A Clockwise Course
The 2001 Tour course hasn't been fully confirmed, but details are slowly filtering in. The 88th Tour will begin with a prologue in Dunkerque before heading to Anvers, in Belgium in stage two. The route will continue in a clockwise direction - moving to the Alpes before the Pyrenees.

Frankie Andreu was the first US rider to finish today's time trial. His time was 1h15'12" - 4'37" off the fastest rider of the day so far, Servais Knaven.

12.21 Andreu Says Yesterday's Crowds Were Bigger Than Today
US Postal rider, Frankie Andreu, said that while the crowds on the time trial course today were impressive, yesterday's were "way bigger". "I've never seen as many people on the side of the road ever before," he said of stage 18's 79km in Germany.

Another five-time Tour winner, Bernard Hinault, has predicted the following winners for today: 1. Armstrong; 2. Ullrich; 3. Moreau. He too believes his predictions for today will fill the podium spots in Paris.

Five-time Tour de France winner Eddy Merckx has given his prediction for the time trial. The Belgian legend believes the top three today will be: 1. Lance Armstrong (US Postal); 2. Jan Ullrich (Telekom); 3. Joseba Beloki (Festina). He also believes these 3 will fill the final podium places at the Tour's conclusion in Paris.

11.07 Telekom Director A Former Winner In Mulhouse
One of the big favorites for today's time trial is Telekom's rider in 2nd overall, Jan Ullrich. The rider lives near the site of today's start. His team director, Walter Godefroot, was 4th last rider to win a stage at the site of today's finish, Mulhouse. His win was in 1973.

11.04 Germans Farewell Tour Visit In Force
By the end of today, the Tour will have raced a total of 113.5km in Germany. Today's time trial leaves Germany at the 37.5km mark. The public's support of the Tour de France in Germany has been sensational! The time trial course was fully lined with tents and campervans of fans last night. Today there is standing room only on the sides of the roads for the time trial.

The Belgian rider, Serge Baguet (Lotto) now has the best time at the 20.5km mark. He is 6" better than Bonjour's Bouyer.

10.59 Bouyer Now Best At 20.5km
The 7th rider to start has bettered Nazon's time at the 20.5km mark. Nazon's team-mate, Frank Bouyer was 20" better with a time of 25'17" at the first check.

10.56 Mulhouse's Tour History
The Tour has had 12 stage finishes in the town of today's time trial conclusion. Mulhouse has also hosted the starts of the Tour twice (in 1959 and 1971). The last rider to win a stage in Mulhouse, was the overall winner from 1983 & '84, Laurent Fignon. His win in Mulhouse was the last victory of his 10-Tour career after a day of climbing in 1992.

The first two riders to start have recorded a time at the first check. Damien Nazon currently has the best time at the 20.5km mark of 26'03". Perraudeau is 1'15" behind his team-mate's early standard.

David Millar, the winner of the only other individual time trial of the Tour so far this year, will be the 66th rider to start. The Cofidis rider's departure time is 11.30am.
