With 5 climbs today, there are a total of 130 points on offer for first place at the 5 summits today. The points for first at the top of the 'Hors Category' climb up the Col de Joux-Plane are 40, then 30 for the two category-one climbs, 20 for the cat-2 and 10 for the cat-3.

Serrano has abandoned the stage. He was involved in a fall on the early descent. He is the fourth ONCE rider to retire from the 2000 Tour de France.

The winner of the last stage, Marco Pantani and the King of the Mountains, Santiago Botero have fallen on the early descent. They are back on their bikes and chasing the peloton.

After five minutes of racing the peloton is on the descent from Courchevel-la-Praz. There have been no attacks yet. The green jersey of Erik Zabel (Telekom) is near the head of the peloton with other riders also up front from the Lotto, La Francaise des Jeux and AG2R teams.

Summer has arrived for the Tour de France. After 12 days of essentially cold and wet conditions, today's 16th stage will be raced under blue skies. The temperature at the start was 16 degrees (C) in the air and 26 degrees on the road.
10.25 Sad News From Stage 13
There will be one minute of silence at the start today in memory of a 12-year-old boy, Philippe, who died two days ago as a result of injuries sustained in an accident with a car from the Tour caravan on July 14.
10.13 Details of the Climbs Today
The first climb today, cat-1 Col des Saisies, is 15.1km long at a gradient of 6.5 per cent. The other climb's details are: Col des Aravis (8.2km long at 6.4%); Col de la Colombiere (11.8km at 5.8%); Cote de Chatillon-sur-Cluses (5.1km at 5.4%) & the Col de Joux-Plane (11.8km at 8.5%).
10.10 50km Before Roads Rise
The 16th stage begins with a descent from the 1,325m start in Courchevel-le-Praz. There are about 50km of riding before the roads turn upward again for this last stage of real climbing. Climbing begins today just after the first intermediate sprint (in Albertville, 49km).

There is one 'Hors Category' climb before the descent to the finish in Morzine. The 1,700m Col de Joux-Plane is at the 184.5km mark.
