Love it or loathe it, you cannot ignore the Fritz-Walter Stadion, named after Germany’s 1954 World Cup-winning captain but brought up to date by a recent refit. Known as the most intimidating ground in Germany, its architecture is harsh, almost cubist in parts, and not pretty.

Until the renovation, which was ongoing in September, it looked like a low-budget Highbury, or an extended Dell. Supporters sit close to the edge of the pitch and create a raucous atmosphere. The upgrade will see the dilapidated east and west stands brought up to 21st century standards with new floodlights installed, replacing unsightly pylons.
