The Olympiastadion — or Olympic Stadium — will host the World Cup final, and
it is indubitably a venue worthy of the occasion, in terms of history and
character. This is the stadium where American Jesse Owens gallantly won his four
golds under the sneering nose of Adolf Hitler at the 1936 Olympic Games, but a
renovation since the turn of the century has rendered it practically
unrecognisable 70 years down the line. Walk along Jesse Owens Avenue on your way
to the stadium, marvel at the brand new lower tier which provides spectators
with an enviable view, and gaze in awe at the splendid new roof. But above all,
take in the amazing floodlights — singular. The days of floodlight pillars are
gone in Berlin, where one band of light runs all the way around the stadium,
providing superb pitch lighting. How does it look? Rather like the old Wembley
from afar, with the twin pillars from the 1936 Games still intact on the
approach to the stadium.
