Thun take place among Europe's elite
23/08/2005:
Tiny Swiss club Thun secured an unexpected place among Europe's soccer elite by clinching a spot in the Champions League group stage tonight.
Thun beat Swedish champions Malmo 3-0 in the second leg of their third qualifying round tie at Bern's Wankdorf Stadium for a remarkable 4-0 aggregate victory.
Brazilian Bernardi fired Thun in front after 26 minutes, heading home a cross from Portuguese defender Jose Goncalves.
Five minutes before the break, newly-capped Swiss international Mauro Lustrinelli doubled the lead after profiting from a poor back pass by Malmo defender Joseph Elanga.
Lustrinelli compounded Malmo's misery in the 66th minute curling a speculative lob from 30 metres into the top right corner of Mattias Asper's goal.
