  • Garcia’s back and at peace with himself

Tue, May 13, 2008  HE'S BACK, isn't he? On Sunday night, as Sergio Garcia mischievously kissed his prodigal putter as he left the island green 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass and, later, caressed the Waterford Crystal trophy as if it were a long-lost treasure, the mercurial Spaniard - who had banished whatever demons swirled around in that head of his - contemplated the biggest win of his career, in The Players, and vowed it would be a stepping stone to what he really wants: a major win!  p

Yesterday, as Mother Nature contrived to toughen an already difficult course with winds gusting up to 40mph, the 35th Players Championship here - which has pretensions of gate-crashing that major club one day - turned into a battle of mental fortitude and creative shot-making. Just like a major, in fact.  p
  • 'Gobsmacked' Harrington to fight on

Mon, May 12, 2008  THE TRIP home with Lee Westwood was planned, it's just that - for Pádraig Harrington - the transatlantic flight on his Ryder Cup colleague's private jet was earlier than expected. A missed cut, at any time, is not something any golfer relishes; but Harrington professed to being "gobsmacked" by the manner in which he failed to survive here.  p

Mon, May 12, 2008  IT WOULD be trite to describe Pedro Figueiredo's victory in the AIB-sponsored Irish Amateur Open Championship at Royal Dublin as a procession, but the 16-year-old displayed a striking maturity to match his obvious ability as he comfortably coped with the pressure to earn a deserved triumph.  p
