Ulster claim Interprovincial honours
A Joe Kernan-managed Ulster team has won the M Donnelly Interprovincial Football final at Ruislip in London, beating Munster by 1-15 to 1-8. The northerners were ahead by 0-8 to 0-4 at the break, despite their dangerous forward line of Paddy Bradley (Derry), Stephen O'Neill (Tyrone) and Michael Murphy (Donegal) being well marshalled for the most part by the Munster back line. O'Neill did manage to wriggle free to shoot an audacious point from a tight angle to illuminate a tight first-half, however. Munster played with the breeze in the second half and were soon back in the contest. Waterford's Gary Hurney capped a fine performance with a goal and Cork's Nicholas Murphy then shot a point to level the scores before county team mate Daniel Goulding edged his province one ahead. However, this only provided the catalyst for Ulster to up their game, Bradley slotting a point from an O'Neill pass, and then Down's Danny Hughes found the net to effectively seal the game. The GAA has come in for much criticism for neglecting to market the competition, and the lack of a fixed point in the calendar at which it's staged. The resulting poor atendances have lead many to recommend shelving the competition but at a function to mark the occasion, GAA President Christy Cooney stated that as long as the players wished it to remain, the GAA would support it.
