In 1912, a remarkable campaign to defeat 'Home Rule', in which Ulster Protestants threatened the British Government with the use of force to prevent Irish self-government, started. At the heart of this campaign was a public document that pledged absolute resistance. Ireland became gripped by a political crisis which threatened to shake the very foundations of the British Empire.
