Sat 05 May 2007Clash over festival funding moveArt Scape Edited by Deirdre FalveyIt is not much
of a laughing matter, but one would imagine the nasty parasite that
has infected Galway's public water supply would provide endless
inspiration for parade designers at this year's Galway Arts
Festival (GAF), writes
Lorna Siggins. However, Macnas says it can't do the parade, due to lack of
funding; so, GAF has been endeavouring to raise the necessary
readies for other free street theatre events. Guinness, its
principal sponsor to the tune of about €1 million for the
past five years, is no longer involved, and so GAF has approached
Galway City Council to see if the local authority can increase its
annual contribution, which represents about 2 per cent of the
festival's €2.5 million budget.
