The sides were level at 0-3 apiece at the interval before St Colman's turned up the heat in the early period of the second half to take a four-point lead at one stage.
Tommy Mitchell and Keith Prendergast had points to put the Claremorris College clear by two, Dean Gavin responded for the Westport college but, when Prendergast and David Commins extended the St Colman's lead.
Rice College fought back but in vain, three points from Lewis Cawley reducing the deficit to a single score before time ran out.
