  • Passion and belief reappear

Kevin Doyle heads home the Republic of Ireland's goal during the Euro 2008 qualifier tie against Slovakia last night at Croke Park. SOCCER Euro 2008 Qualifying Group D/ Rep of Ireland 1Slovakia 0:  Ah, this Irish team and records. After an autumn spent matching or bettering them for defeats both at home and abroad, last night at Croke Park they wrapped up their brief spring campaign by matching another with their fourth successive victory in a qualifying game, writes Emmet Malone at Croke Park p
  • Staunton survives the ring of fire

SOCCER/Manager's reaction: We are not quite used to the more gladiatorial space which the press conference room in Croke Park offers. The media rise in tiers above the managers who come to speak and on bad days one can imagine that things will get theatrically tense, writes  Tom Humphries. p
  • Dublin slip-up when least expected

Neil McManus of Antrim does his best to hold possession and surge away from the attentions of Dublin's Gregg Bennett and Ronan Fallon during last night's National Hurling League, Division 1B, encounter at Casement Park, Belfast. GAELIC GAMES/NHL, Antrim 1013 Dublin 0-12: The first thing the Dublin hurlers did on their arrival at Casement Park yesterday evening was check the pitch for banana skins. They then started into a vigorous warm-up, neither of which could prevent them from slipping up on their way to making the play-offs of the Allianz Hurling League, writes Ian O'Riordan at Casement Park p

  • Stephen just glad they're still in the hunt

Players' Reaction: It's hard to imagine after that night in San Marino, and the less than positive response to the scraping of that 2-1 win, that the Ireland players were enthusiastically anticipating their return to Dublin for these games against Wales and Slovakia. p
  • Victory relieves pressure on Staunton

The most important aspect to be reflected upon this morning is Ireland have gained six points from two very awkward fixtures. On reflection, one poor performance will be overshadowed by last night's display. p
  • Tired old team in need of a shake-up

Group D/TV View: Great teams get old in a jiffy. It is the same in any sport. In the RTÉ studio last night, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost of soccer punditry suddenly discovered the magic had gone. It is almost a quarter of a century since the Irish soccer revival began and it seems as if Bill O'Herlihy and John Giles and Eamon Dunphy have been with us every step of the way. And as they warmed up for the Slovakia match, it showed. p
  • Toni double sinks Scots

Group B/Italy 2 Scotland 0: Scotland's Euro 2008 qualification hopes suffered a blow as they lost to two Luca Toni goals in Bari. p
  • Czechs struggle, easy win for Wales

Group D round-up/Czech Republic 1 Cyprus 0: The Czech Republic barely made up for Saturday's home loss to Germany and a controversial party that night when they struggled to beat modest Cyprus 1-0 in Liberec yesterday. p
  • No release of pressure on McClaren

Group E/Andorra 0 England 3: England's win was so dispiriting that the greatest passion shown by their fans came as they called, from an early stage, for Steve McClaren to be sacked. Further protests against the manager in Estonia in June could well bring his downfall and he will be without Wayne Rooney there, following an unruly display that ensured his second booking of the campaign. p
  • Another day, another magic show by Healy and Co

Group F/Northern Ireland 2 Sweden 1:  Wednesday nights at Windsor Park, said Lawrie Sanchez, are "magical". So it proved once again last night. Where England and Spain have fallen in recent times, Sweden followed and once again it was Northern Ireland's modern magician David Healy who was responsible. Healy has scored all the Irish goals that have beaten these teams and here, brilliantly, he nabbed another pair. p

  • Brosnan and McMahon fighting fit for replay

Anyone in Croke Park on St Patrick's Day will recall the sight of Eoin Brosnan and Brian McMahon hobbling off the field at crucial stages of the AIB All-Ireland club football final, and the look of concern written all over the face of Dr Crokes manager Pat O'Shea. Crossmaglen, trailing for most of the second half, inevitably seized the advantage and eventually forced the draw in the dying seconds of injury-time. p
