    First impressions of the markets scheme: a new building has been carved back to allow light into the area and onto the west side of the market hall. The site covers 3.6 acres and will be developed with a mixed-use scheme, combining residential, community centre, offices, retail and restaurants with an emphasis on food (and away from the drinking reputation of Temple Bar) Whatever about the actual buildings in the north-central Dublin markets scheme, urban space specialists have been drafted in to make the public spaces people-friendly, writes Emma Cullinan

He has worked in collaboration with a number of practices including both HKR and Gehl. He is also doing a project with Anthony Reddy and Partners. He is part of an advisory panel headed up by Dick Gleeson Dublin city planner.
  • 'A lot of designs are too clean'

    Helle Søholt set up Gehl Architects with Jan Gehl in 2000. Jan has written a number of books on urban design and had had an academic life before setting up practice at the age of 64. "In the last eight years he has been able to make this into an operational philosophy and not just way of thinking," says Helle, who has worked on a number of projects with John Prevc of Make who is closely involved in the Dublin scheme.
