    • Tackling world food crisis

      THE INTERNATIONAL food shortage has rapidly climbed up the world's political agenda, as prices of staples like rice and wheat continue their steep increase and more governments take emergency measures to maintain basic supplies. People who spend 50-70 per cent of their small incomes on food are as shocked by these changes as the governments which have normally subsidised its supply to maintain social stability. International attention must now concentrate on how they can be managed to avoid political crises, allowing time for decisions on how the shortages can be tackled in the medium term. p

      THE ELECTION of Senator Ciarán Cannon as leader of the Progressive Democrats marks a significant day for the party. It represents the beginning of a make-or-break attempt to revitalise the organisation, on the basis of its performance in next year's local government elections. It will require great determination and perseverance to bring it about. p

      ST NICHOLAS of Myra church in Francis Street, in the centre of Dublin's Liberties, is in some ways no different from many public places today, with its 24-hour closed circuit television and video recording as well as a request to switch off your mobile phone before you go in. But in other ways it is unique, with its richly ornamented interior and its beautifully restored Harry Clarke stained glass window. p
