    • Good Budget in tougher times

In his Budget yesterday, the Tánaiste and Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen, cut next year's forecast for the growth rate in real Gross National Product to 2.8 per cent. On this basis, the economy in 2008 will experience its slowest rate of economic expansion since 1993. p
    • Defeat for Chávez

      The key fact about Sunday's surprise defeat of President Hugo Chávez's proposal to change Venezeula's constitution was the massive abstention of his own supporters. Compared to the seven million votes he received in the presidential election last December, only 4.3 million voted in favour of these changes. Overall turnout was down from 70 to 56 per cent. His opponents rallied some 30 per cent of the electorate to give them a very narrow victory of 50.7 to 49.3 per cent. p
