      By its very nature, cocaine use is difficult to quantify. However, a range of indicators points to a steep upward curve in its consumption across a range of ages and class groups. Increased availability, lower prices and greater affluence mean cocaine is fast becoming the recreational drug of choice for many younger people across the socio-economic divide. p

      There is no logical reason why the political leaderships of devolved governments, even of widely differing persuasions, should not make common cause in pitching their case to central government. Nationalists and unionists can do so in Northern Ireland in the context of the devolved Assembly without threatening their respective constitutional positions, and, mutatis mutandis, so can the two devolved administrations in Holyrood and Belfast to mutual advantage. p

      In the early hours of June 20th, 1631, the residents of Baltimore Cove in Co Cork woke to find their village in flames and 200 Barbary pirates running through the streets. The raiders cowed the villagers with blood-curdling cries and flashing sabres, but two men who dared to resist were hacked to death. The rest were dragged off to waiting ships. p
