  Ethically and politically Paul Wolfowitz has lost his battle to remain on as president of the World Bank. This is a major international defeat for the Bush administration. It follows this week's damning report from a panel of the bank's board into Mr Wolfowitz's role in the negotiation of a compensation package for his girlfriend, bank employee Shaha Reza. p
  

• Victims of violence

  When a number of high-profile voluntary agencies threaten to withhold co-operation from an Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, it is time for Tánaiste and Minister for Justice Michael McDowell to sit up and take notice. The National Women's Council of Ireland, along with Amnesty International and the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, want all forms of violence against women, including rape, sexual assault and trafficking, to be included in the responsibilities of the new body. In addition, they are angry over a lack of consultation. p
