    • Dangers of taking peace for granted

      The family of Avril Monaghan appealed to the coroner at the Omagh inquests that her unborn twins should be included in the official list of victims. John Leckey, whose conduct of the inquest has been brave and compassionate, explained gently that, under the present rules, this was not possible, but said that he would be writing to the DPP to draw particular attention to their destruction. p

    • Compensating Abuse

      The decision by the Government to establish a compensation tribunal for the victims of abuse in institutions is to be welcomed. It immediately clears the way for the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse to proceed with its work. The decision also lifts a huge burden from those who have already suffered too much, and who were facing the daunting prospect of proving in the courts how much they had been damaged and asking that a price be put upon it. p
    • Gore and Bush debate

      In a media-driven age, television debates are expected to make a difference in political campaigning. It all depends on the candidates and the issues that concern them. The debate between Mr Al Gore and Mr George W. Bush - the first of three in the closing stages of this US presidential election - is not expected to change many voters' views on the merits of their policies and abilities for the job, even though many of them were paying close attention for the first time. p

It has defined the intellectual ethos of educated elites across the Western world since the second World War: its quintessence is that people of different religious and national identities could and should come together by harnessing their collective goodwill within new and benign institutions. Oikoumenikos: it bore the UN, called together Vatican II, caused SALT and the end of nuclear tests; it gave us the Green movement, and spawned peace movements in South Africa, the Middle East, and the North. p

    • Thrush Pie?

      The shooting season for many birds - mallard, teal, wigeon, golden plover, snipe - began on September 1st. Pheasant and woodcock come on November 1st. That's in Ireland. In France just now the thrushes are falling to the guns and a magazine goes through the various kinds of thrush before telling us of the more delicious ways to prepare the birds for the table. The heading is "Tasty, the Thrush". p
