      Mr Justice Ronan Keane's interview with RTE on Sunday was the first of its kind to have been given by a serving Chief Justice. Coinciding with the start of the legal year, it set a welcome precedent in an area of public life not usually characterised by the openness and accountability which those who influence opinion regularly demand of politicians, administrators and leaders of industry. p

      The current violence between Israelis and Palestinians is much the worst in four years - and clearly puts their peace process in jeopardy. It stems from a visit by the right-wing opposition leader, Mr Ariel Sharon, last Thursday to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, a site sacred to Muslims but which also contains parts of the ancient Jewish temple. p

      You Can't Go Home Again, the title of a book, is far more widely known as one of those wry, quasi-philosophical phrases people use from time to time without giving much thought to their origins. Still, for some it remains most associated with the work of Thomas Wolfe, one of the most singular giants - in more ways than one - of US literature. And as his use of it referred to many things - not just returning home after years away, not just to the hopeless task of regaining lost innocence, but also to the aftermath of war as one who observed the beginning of the rot in 1930s Europe - perhaps Wolfe is the surest custodian of the phrase and its many nuances. p
