    Máire Gavan Duffy has died aged 92 Máire Gavan Duffy , who has died in her 93rd year, was a woman whose life was steeped in the history of Ireland. Her grandfather, Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, was imprisoned with Daniel O'Connell. Sir Charles was one of the leaders of the Young Irelanders and was tried in 1848 for his involvement in that movement. He subsequently emigrated to Australia, where he later became a member of parliament. p

Simpson case in the US as "vulgar theatre" Terry de Valera , who has died aged 85, was appointed Taxing Master of the Supreme and High Courts in 1969, and later that year became Senior Master; he retired in 1992. He was also a painter and musician, and he had an interest in the occult. p
  • Examiner who fell foul of Des O'Malley

    Austin Kennan , who has died aged 89, was a former examiner of restrictive practices. He was controversially dropped from the post in 1979 after his relationship with the then minister for industry and commerce, Desmond O'Malley, became strained. p
  • Maverick, enigmatic Northern Ireland centre forward

    Derek Dougan who has died aged 69, played for Northern Ireland in the finals of the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. He was not Northern Ireland's first choice, but Billy Simpson, the Glasgow Rangers centre forward, had pulled a muscle after just five minutes' training in Sweden, leaving Dougan to lead the attack in the first game against the Czechs, which Northern Ireland won 1-0. p
  • Distinguished practitioner of occupational medicine

    Donal McSorley: courteous and never afraid to speak his mind Dr Donal McSorley , who has died aged 58, was born to Dr Joe and Eithne McSorley. He attended secondary school at St Mary's College in Rathmines, Dublin before studying medicine in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He would later serve as president of the association of graduates of the college. p
