checking their equipment, to realise it at the time. p

On May 16th the general-election campaign is in full, if rather

It's the night of the general election, and I've been dispatched
to the Marian Hall in Birr, Co Offaly, to photograph the rise of
Brian Cowen and the fall of Tom Parlon. Every hour we are being
told that it will happen any minute now. Eleven hours later and, at
last, it's really time.

century inspired a generation of photographers. For more than 50
years names such as Herman Leonard, Frank Wolff, William Claxton,

This takes place in the peak of the action during the Hilton
Hotel Kilmainham Phoenix Park Motor Races, in August. They're the
highlight of the motor-racing year. It's a free event, so it draws
huge crowds. p
PICTURE PERFECT MEMORIES
I have a friend who doesn't own a camera. On her travels around the world she has made a point of not taking photographs. Or at least she doesn't take photographs with any device other than her brain, which collects and stores images enthusiastically from moment to moment. These images are never out of focus. There is never red eye. She sorts through them easily, pulling out the pictures from the folders of her mind whenever she wants to remember how it felt to stand in that place, at that time, with those people or alone. p
