Fears of job losses at Cork electronics company

OLIVIA KELLLEHER

WORKERS AT Hormann Electronics in Mahon, Cork, were yesterday facing into an uneasy weekend as rumours circulated of possible job losses at the plant.

It is believed the company will be calling its workforce to a meeting on Monday morning to announce between 140 and 160 job losses.

About 250 people are employed at the company’s Cork facility, and it is expected that every effort will be made to safeguard the remaining jobs. Hormann Electronics is an electronics contract manufacturing company and has been in operation in Cork for more than 30 years.

It offers a variety of manufacturing services from printed circuit board assembly to a full design service. Founded in 1977 as Hormann Security Systems, it has weathered a series of storms.

Acquired by Racal Chubb in 1987, two years later it went through its first management buyout, beginning the shift to getting into electronic contract manufacturing and product assembly.

Ten years later the company was again bought out, this time by APW.

The company has yet to make any official comment on any possible job cuts.
