A man died yesterday in a collision in Co Meath involving two trucks and a van which took place at about 12.30pm on the N3, three miles from Kells.

One of the vehicles burst into flames at the scene. Initial indications are that the van was travelling south towards Navan when it braked and was struck from behind by a truck. The impact sent it into the path of an oncoming truck that was heading northwards. The van burst into flames and its driver was killed instantly.

A large section of the N3 between Kells and Navan remained impassable for a time.

The van driver is understood to be from Co Louth. The truck drivers did not suffer any serious injuries.

As gardaí sealed off the road and began an investigation into exactly what happened they also renewed their appeal for any witnesses to a crash at Pace, near Dunboyne, further south on the N3, at 9.25am on Thursday morning.

In the crash a woman and her unborn child died.

The woman's name had still not been released by late yesterday.
