Five youths held after petrol bomb thrown at two gardaí in Bray

Steven Carroll

A petrol bomb was thrown in the direction of two gardaí who were on patrol in Co Wicklow yesterday.

The gardaí were on mountain bike patrol in Fassaroe, Bray, when the device was hurled in their direction. The petrol splashed up the trousers of one of the officers, but was quickly extinguished. He escaped without injury. "Five youths were subsequently arrested in relation to this incident.

"They are currently detained at Bray Garda station under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act," a Garda spokesman said last night.

Yesterday's incident was the second attack on gardaí in Co Wicklow this week.

A garda was discharged from hospital on Tuesday evening with a head wound after being injured in an altercation in Carnew in the west of the county yesterday afternoon.

A 30-year-old man was later charged in connection with the incident and remanded in custody.
