Mon 04 Apr 2007Labour, FF clash over corporate tax moveIreland's low rate of corporate tax has surfaced as an issue in
the lead-up to the election campaign with charge and counter-charge
between Fianna Fáil and Labour over their respective positions
in the European Parliament.Ireland's 12.5 per cent rate is widely regarded as a cornerstone
of current economic prosperity. A claim by Minister for Finance
Brian Cowen last week that Labour could not be relied on to protect
the low Irish rate against moves for tax harmonisation in the
European Union was rejected by a Labour spokesman as "typical
Fianna Fáil distortion".
