Find your ancestorsWhat is it? Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves pressure to various points on the feet or hands, areas believed to be linked to every organ, gland, bone or system of the body. There are detailed maps which refer to specific reflexology points on the feet.
Why do people go for reflexology?
Many people enjoy reflexology for its relaxation properties. There is also plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that it contributes to the relief of pain conditions such as migraine, sinus and menstrual problems, and irritable bowel syndrome.
It is also used to help alleviate some side effects of chemotherapy.
Who shouldn't go?
Reflexology is not recommended for sufferers of deep vein thrombosis or for anyone suffering from any form of haemorrhage or undiagnosed pain.
Generally speaking, reflexology is also unsuitable for those with diabetes or epilepsy or anyone on a lot of medication.
How can I contact a reflexologist?
As there is no regulation, anyone can set themselves up as a reflexologist, so it is essential that you ensure that he/she is a member of one of the recognised associations of reflexologists. These are the Irish Reflexology Institute and the National Register of Reflexology.
How much will it cost?
Treatment costs vary between €35 and €50 per hour.
