    The European Commission has revised downwards its forecast for economic growth in the Republic, predicting that the economy will grow by just 3.3 per cent this year. The Commission's Autumn Economic Forecasts, which were published in Brussels yesterday, predict sluggish growth in Ireland next year before the economy bounces back in 2004. p

  • Cancellation of helicopter deal deplored

    The news that the tender for three medium airlift helicopters for the Air Corps was to be cancelled was "greeted with astonishment" in Baldonnel and had a severe effect on Air Corps morale, an aeronautical engineer told the 10th annual delegate conference of the Representative Association of Commissioned Officers (RACO) in Tralee, Co Kerry. p
  • Uranium found in Wicklow water

    The Environmental Protection Agency has discovered Uranium 238 in a well supplying water to homes in Baltinglass, Co Wicklow. p

    Newcastle United's Craig Bellamy, with two goals, proved his side's hero in Holland last night, beating Feyenoord's patrick Lodewijk, with a shot across the goalkeeper's body for his his first Feyenoord - 2 Newcastle Utd - 3 A night of seriously dramatic entertainment in a great stadium pulsing with excitement ended in appropriate fashion for Newcastle United when Craig Bellamy scored a 90th-minute winner. The three points were a superb achievement in their own right, but they also brought Newcastle a place in the Champions League second phase as Juventus, to everyone's surprise, won 2-1 in Kiev. p
