Man held over Sligo girl's disappearance

A 43-year-old man remains in Garda custody in Sligo today in connection with the disappearance of a 14-year-old girl whose remains were found in a lake earlier this year.

The man is being questioned at Sligo town Garda station about the disappearance of Melissa Mahon.

The schoolgirl also from Sligo town, disappeared on September 13th, 2006.

Skeletal remains, believed to be those of Melissa’s, were recovered by a Garda sub-aqua unit from nearby Lough Gill after a tip-off in February.

The man was arrested at his home in Sligo town yesterday and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He can be held for 24 hours without charge.
