The Government today offered details of a funding package for budding sports stars.

Minister for Sport Seamus Brennan revealed a €13.5 million package to support a wide range of bodies that govern a variety of sports across the country.

More than 80 groups will benefit from the funding, which will cover the employment of professional staff, coach development, hosting of events, administration of sports, and programmes aimed at increasing participation.

"This financial support demonstrates our commitment to the governing bodies of sport," said Mr Brennan. "They remain the key component of the Irish sports infrastructure."

A total of €11.91 million was set aside for 57 governing bodies for the core grant - with Special Olympics Ireland securing more than €2.8 million and Athletics Ireland receiving €1.3 million.

Cycling, rowing, cricket, swimming, canoeing and mountaineering organisations were also among the beneficiaries.

An additional 25 groups were allocated €1.57 million under the 2008 Women in Sport programme, aimed at increasing the participation of women.
