- 17:37 Northern Ireland should be an inspiration to those around the world seeking peace, Pope Benedict XVI said today. It has shown that conflict, no matter how ingrained, can be overcome, the pontiff told Ireland's new ambassador to the Holy See, Noel Fahey. "It is my fervent prayer that the peace which is already bringing renewal to the North will inspire political and religious leaders in other troubled zones of the world," he added.

- 15:56 British mortgage bank Northern Rock said today it had not drawn down any of the money from the emergency facility it had arranged with the Bank of England so far. It was reported that depositors withdrew £1 billion (€1.45 billion) from their accounts yesterday.
- 12:01 A 17-year-old boy was remanded in custody today on charges connected to the murder of a Belfast greengrocer this week. Harry Holland (65) was stabbed in the head as he attempted to stop the theft of his delivery van. A 15-year-old girl was remanded yesterday in connection with the stabbing. Another youth (17) remains in custody.
