Man (25) charged with murder of Dublin nurse

A 25-year-old man from Co Wiclow was charged today with the murder of 31-year-old nurse Sara Neligan in Dublin.

Ms Neligan, daughter of prominent heart surgeon Maurice Neligan, was found stabbed to death in her Dublin apartment on Thursday night.

Brian McBarron (25) appeared at Dublin District Court today charged with her murder in an apartment on Pearse Street.

Mr McBarron, originally from Arklow but living at an address at the same apartment complex, was arrested on Thursday night by gardai.

Ms Neligan's body was discovered at the Wintergarden apartment complex after friends alerted the gardai they had not seen her for a number of days. She was stabbed a number of times, the court heard today.

Detective Sergeant Brian Duffy told the court this morning that when Mr McBarron was charged with Ms Neligan's murder he replied "I am sorry for what I have done".

Judge John Coughlan granted an application by the defence solicitor to have McMahon assessed medically and psychologically. No application for bail was made. He was remanded to appear at Clover Hill District Court next Friday.
