Electronic tags work at all toll roads

Luke Cassidy

A new system of electronic payment has been introduced today by the National Roads Authority (NRA) for use on any of the State's toll roads.

The eToll system has been created so that the electronic tags issued by separate companies will work on all toll roads.

Previously, drivers needed separate tags to pass through the express lanes of the country's toll roads such as the Eazy Pass system on the M50 or the Eirtag on the M4.

A spokesman for the NRA said the new system had had a 98 per cent success rate in trials and that so far today "everything seemed to be working very well".

The spokesman said that the only problem envisaged was that if a car has two or more tags installed, the system randomly selects a tag. Although this won't affect private operators it does make it more difficult for businesses to maintain accurate records.

Drivers with an electronic tag are entitled to use any lane at a toll plaza. Information on using and purchasing electronic tags is available on the NRA's website.
