SMITHFIELD TOWER
Until the mid-1990s Smithfield had been ignored by developers for more than a century. But recent investments are transforming the area around the old horse market and scrap-yards. These views are taken from a glass observation pod assembled atop the 170-feet Jameson Distillery chimney built in 1895.
This odd-looking structure affords a spectacular 360° cityscape. The immediate overview is of Smithfield's cobbled streets where amid the domes and spires, roof-top carparks and apartment blocks jostle for dominance. Toward the horizon the view takes in the entire Dublin Bay from Howth to Killiney.
Southwards lie the Four Courts, St Patrick's Cathedral and the dome of Rathmines Church; to the north the Ballymun towers - scheduled for demolition - Phibsboro Church and the mid-19th century Mater Hospital. To the west the Guinness brewery, and its storehouse, Heuston Station and the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham.
