Batman: Danny Elfman Film Music, live at the National Concert Hall

By Kathleen Harris, 23rd January 2012

Prolific composer Danny Elfman is responsible for some of the best-known film music of our time. He has been awarded honours for the likes of Batman, Spider-Man, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mission Impossible and the theme for The Simpsons.

On Saturday, February 25th, cinephiles and music aficionados alike will have the opportunity to catch a live performance of some of this world-renowned composer’s best work at a concert celebrating music and film at the National Concert Hall in Dublin.

The concert is to take place as part of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (JDIFF), which runs from February 16th to 26th. The RTÉ Concert Orchestra will present a selection of Elfman’s scores, including Tim Burton’s Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Spider-Man and Beetlejuice. The concert will also feature music by great composers who influenced him, including Bernard Herrmann, Elfman Phillip Glass and Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

An LA native, Elfman spent much of his youth in his local cinema, where he began to develop a love for film music, finding inspiration in the likes of Bernard Herrmann and Franz Waxman. Elfman started out his career as an actor, but transitioned into music in 1976 as lead singer-songwriter of American new wave band Oingo Boingo, which he remained a part of until 1995. His debut as a film composer came in 1985 when Tim Burton and Paul Reubens invited him to write the score for Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, their first feature film.

Elfman went on to win four Academy Awards, a Grammy and the prestigious Richard Kirk award at the 2002 BMI Film and TV Awards, an annual award given to a composer who has made significant contributions to film and television music. His scores are among the most recognizable in celluloid history.
