Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre presents Neil Simon’s witty, sophisticated and downright hilarious Plaza Suite for two weeks this February and March.
Rough Magic theatre company follows its sell-out hit production of The Importance of Being Earnest, starring Stockard Channing, with its acclaimed production of comedy play Plaza Suite, a funny and touching exploration of relationships.
Plaza Suite is comprised of three vignettes, divided into three acts. Set in the same room – Suite 719 – in New York’s world-renowned Plaza Hotel, each details the misadventures of three very different couples facing critical moments in their respective lives, with hilarious consequences.
In the first act, a suburban couple attempts to rekindle the romance of their youth by revisiting their honeymoon suite, but their anniversary celebration disintegrates as they become embroiled in an argument. In the second act, a Hollywood producer attempts to seduce an old flame, who is all too familiar with his smooth-talking ways. Neil’s knack for visual slapstick culminates in the final act: when a nervous bride gets cold feet, her baffled parents are thrown into a frantic tizzy as they attempt to coax her out of the locked bathroom in which she has found refuge.
Plaza Suite is usually brought to life on stage by a single cast, with the same actors taking on different characters in each of the mini-dramas. Rough Magic, however, employs three separate casts and three directors – Sophie Motley, Aoife Spillane-Hinks and Matt Torney – for each.
Plaza Suite is a portrait of love, both its heartaches and its joys. A fine display of Neil’s acerbic wit and slapstick hilarity, It is one of the playwright’s most popular and celebrated works.
Deemed “a fantastically enjoyable night at the theatre” by the Irish Times, and hailed as “brilliantly funny” by the Irish independent, Plaza Suite runs at the Gaiety Theatre from February 20th to March 3rd.
Shows run every night Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm, with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm. There are no Sunday performances. Ticket prices range from €15 to €45. Tickets are available form Ticketmaster outlets nationwide. To book online, visit www.ticketmaster.ie.
