Dirty Dancing at Grand Canal Theatre

By Kathleen Harris, 25th January 2012

Johnny and Baby are back. The beloved 1980s classic, Dirty Dancing, has been transformed into a record-breaking smash hit musical. Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage lights up Grand Canal Theatre in Dublin this January and February as part of the show’s first ever UK and Irish tour.

Eleanor Bergstein, the film’s scriptwriter and creator, also wrote the stage version of this coming of age drama. On summer vacation with her family, 18-year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman rebels against her father, falls in love with a dance instructor and finds her own footing, on both the dance floor and in her transition into adulthood.

The stage version features all the much-loved characters and original dialogue from the iconic film, but features exciting new scenes. Brand new choreography and dance sequences from the film are set to many of the songs that featured in the original soundtrack, including ‘Do You Love Me?’, ‘Hungry Eyes’ and the Academy Award-winning ‘(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life’, as well as new songs added especially for this live performance.

Since opening in 2004, the stage version of this classic film has been seen by more than five million people worldwide. It has been one of the most successful musicals in West End history.

Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage runs at Grand Canal Theatre in Dublin until February 25th. Tickets range from €25 to €60 and are available for purchase from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide. To purchase online, visit www.ticketmaster.ie.
