Jay and Silent Bob – the alter egos of Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith respectively – transformed the New Jersey natives into iconic ‘90s film stars. The pair gathered a loyal following after reappearances in Kevin Smith’s cult comedies of the ‘90s, including Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma. Fans will remember all too well the fast-talking, foul-mouthed yet loveable Jay and the sporadic, sage-like monologues of his more intelligent counterpart, the almost-always-silent Silent Bob.
No longer loitering and conducting unsavoury business in convenience-store car parks and suburban shopping malls, Jay and Silent Bob are on tour with a whole new kind of comedy act. After a successful run stateside, the loveable twosome make their way across the pond for the first time ever with their hugely successful podcast, ‘Jay and Silent Bob Get Old’.
The evolution of their comedy podcast goes back to 2007 when Smith and his long-time producer and friend, Scott Mosier, debuted ‘Smodcast’, a weekly one-hour podcast featuring Smith and Mosier, and occasionally guest hosts, candidly discussing their early years together, current affairs and a miscellany of off-the-wall topics.
The unscripted podcast was such a success that Smith invited former guest hosts to create their own podcasts to be posted on the SModcast website and broadcast on the SModcast Internet Radio (S.I.R.). Thus emerged ‘Jay & Silent Bob Get Old’, a podcast of the same format featuring Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith.
After huge online success, Mewes and Smith decided to bring their podcast to life. Rather than recording in a studio, the cult-comedy duo went on tour, recording their trips down memory lane and spontaneous musings in front of audiences, and later releasing the shows for free on www.smodcast.com.
The show is essentially a conversation between two old friends, one that happens to be both touching and absolutely hilarious. Unscripted and uncensored, with no real path or agenda, the show is a refreshing, honest and downright funny trip into the weird and wonderful world of Mewes and Smith.
Jay and Silent Bob come to Dublin’s Vicar Street on Tueday, February 21st and Wednesday, February 22nd. Tickets are on sale now. Tickets cost €43.95, including service charge. To book, visit www.ticketmaster.ie. To check out previous Jay and Silent Bob Get Old shows, visit www.smodcast.com.
