The play focuses on Lear, King of Britain. He fears death is close, so he decides to grant his kingdom to his three daughters, using their adoration of him in order to determine just how big their share should be.

Two of his daughters, Goneril and Regan, heap insincere praise upon Lear, but his youngest daughter, Cordelia, states that she couldn’t possibly articulate the esteem in which she holds her father. Angered by Cordelia’s insubordination, Lear decides to grant the kingdom to Goneril and Regan alone.

Cordelia marries the King of France, who admires her strength and sincerity, and as Lear loses his mind, the French army creeps closer, before there is a stand-off in which familial loyalty is betrayed with murderous results.
