Hot Celeb Hair Looks
From Jen’s youthful fishtail braid to Natalie Portman’s sophisticated side knot, we are loving some of the celeb hair trends right now.
Winner of Head & Shoulders’ ‘Ireland’s Favourite Hairdresser’ award Simon Sweeney from Simon Sweeney Hair Design in Kildare town, gives us step-by-step guides on how to recreate the lush locks of our favourite A-listers.
Look 1: Sienna Miller’s Loose Locks
Step 1: Hair needs to be mid length to long and preferably have very few layers.
Step 2: Blow-dry the hair very naturally using a paddle brush making sure the front section is smooth with a little body on the roots.
Step 3: Take the whole right hand side of the front section, from the parting on very left hand side (or change according to your parting), section this out of way until the rest of the hair is up.
Step 4: Back comb the whole head and apply a small bit of hairspray to the roots, this will give a good base to pin it up and helps it to stay back. Take all the hair apart from the section you took at the start and comb back using a paddle brush, twist and pin up.
Step 5: With the section you left out, take a middle parting and bring hair to sweep across the face on the left leaving it out to give a natural effect. With the rest of hair that’s left twist and pin back to the back section.
LOOK 2: Natalie Portman’s Sophisticated Knot
Step 1: First wash and condition your hair, rinse very well before applying a setting spray or a light mousse.
Step 2: Using paddle brush dry hair upside down to give body. When hair is dry take medium to large sections and curl using either heated rollers or velcro rollers, leave for 15-30 min depending on texture of hair but try to keep a side parting in it while curling.
Step 3: When rollers are out and hair is curled take section at the front of the side were the bun will sit and clip out of way.
Step 4: Bring all the hair loosely to the desired side it generally looks better when it’s the side where there is more hair and pin it until it feels secure and then twist the curls in big sections to cover the exposed clips. Position it so you can see the bun from the front and pin under the ear.
Step 5: With the front section sweep it across the face, pin this very loosely to meet the back bun and pin it just above the bun. If you have a short side fringe it also looks gorgeous when the fringe is left out with lots of volume in it. Finish with a blast of light hairspray.
LOOK 3: Jennifer Aniston's Fishtail Braid
Step 1: First wash and conditioner your hair, rinsing thoroughly. Apply a root lift spray or a very light mousse and blast dry hair upside down with a large paddle brush until slightly damp.
Step 2: The plait should be done while hair is damp not wet. If you are new to french plaits get someone who has more experience with them to help in order to make sure the plait is tight enough.
Step 3: Use a mousse or a setting spray directly onto the section. Section the front at the parting and take the section as low as desired, plait the hair using small sections on thick hair and slightly larger on fine hair making sure you don’t lose your tension. Use a small elastic band to hold the ends, you can either leave it behind the ear or pin it to hairline out of sight.
Step 4: When the plait is in place continue to dry the rest of the hair with the paddle brush preferably upside down in order to get the slight lift on the roots. When hair is dry and smooth use either heated rollers or velcro rollers and wrap the hair in big sections around the rollers and leave for 15-30mins.
Step 5: Take the rollers out and using a shine serum pull down on the curls until just a very small curl is left, don’t use too much serum as it will make it look greasy. Finish with a light blast of hair spray.

“Forget the bleach blonde Barbie look, in times of recession hair trends are going back to their natural roots”, says Michael Doyle. “Hair styles in 2009 will be much more organic and natural.
People have less time and money for keeping up with their high maintenance hairstyles, which is why the California surfer hair and natural block colour are the two major trends we will be seeing for 2009.
Perfect Pony
As seen at the Dolce & Gabbana show.
Step 1: Preparation is key to this look. Wash your hair then blow dry straight and GHD the ends of your hair only if necessary. You hair should look sleek and straight.
Step 2: Using a large paddle brush, brush your hair back making sure to smooth any bumps, the hair should look flat and tight.
Step 3: Using an elastic hair tie with hook ends, wrap the hair tie around the ponytail. Hook ties work better as they are tighter and bumps in your hair are less likely to occur.

Brigitte Bardot Classic Vixen Up Do.
Step 1: Wash and dry your hair, rinse well ensuring not to leave any residue of condition. Comb through to take out any knots.
Step 2: Add a small amount of Kerastase Volumactive (€24.30 at Peter Mark), a light mouse that will help give your hair volume. Blow dry your hair with your head down and use the paddle brush to keep your damp hair near the heat.
Step 3: When your hair is completely dry backcomb it to give lots of volume towards the back of your head. When your hair has the desired volume take two sections of hair from the front and pin them back loosely. Leave some strands of hair towards the front of your face to emulate the Brigitte Bardot look. Use L’Oreal’s Elnett (€6.95 at Peter Mark) to hold the style.
Evolution of the Pony into a Sophisticated Knot
As seen at Lanvin.
Step 1: Put hair in a ponytail, see step 1-3 from Perfect Pony.
Step 2: Twist the ponytail tight and slowly create a circle, when doing this use bobby pins along the hair knot to keep in place. This can take some time and lots of bobby pins but keep at it because the look will be über sophisticated.
Step 3: When the knot is in place use L’Oreal’s Elnett (€6.95 at Peter Mark) to hold the style.
Tip: Take a hairnet with beads and wrap it around the knot for a classic look.
Surfer Hair
Step 1: Wash your hair with the correct shampoo for your hair type and if you do not suffer from extremely damaged hair, don’t use the conditioner, this will allow the product to ad heir to your hair better.
Step 2: Blow dry your hair with a diffuser to give your hair body and use Curl Conscious Cream by Bumble & bumble (€29.50 at Peter Mark), the cream will help give you soft and defined hair. Do not curl your hair as you are trying to achieve a wave more than a curl.
Step3: If your hair is starting to look like a lion’s mane, don’t worry as this is what we are trying to achieve, the products will tame the hair into the surfer look! Take Redken’s Glass Look (€28.00 at Peter Mark) and put the product in your hands, rub them together to warm the serum then work evenly through your hair. Redken Glass Look transforms frizzy dull hair into sun shimmering splendour.
Step 4: Lastly use the Bumble & bumble Surf Spray (€23.50) on your roots and lightly through the body of your hair, this will give the ultimate surfer chic look.

Joy Hawkridge, Hair Stylist from Whetstone Hairdressing in Parliament Street in Dublin explains how to get these next hairstyles yourself.
The Polished Pony
Smooth, streamlined ponytails were all over the catwalk this autumn winter and Beyoncé has been rocking this trend on the red carpet with aplomb. As with all simple do’s, the devil is in the detail, so you need to slick down every stray to achieve the look.
How to get the look
Thankfully, this is also one of the easier ones to create and can be a serious saviour on bad hair days or when winter winds make mince meat of more delicate tresses.
Joy Hawkridge, Hair Stylist from Whetstone Hairdressing in Parliament Street in Dublin explains how to get it: “The best way to achieve this look at home is firstly to blow dry you hair all back off your face try to get it as smooth as possible (you can also use a straightening irons), then, using a bristle brush, tilt your head up and fasten the pony tail.
Using a light hairspray like Aveda Air Control afterwards, spray from a distance and with your hand gently stroke lose hairs back. Use a straightening iron for the ends just for that real sleek finish and a bit of Brilliant Spay-On Shine.
The Sleek Bob
This style made a huge comeback this year with Yves St Laurent using it as the signature hairstyle on the catwalk for this season.
Various interpretations of it have been seen on the red carpet since, with Gwyneth Paltrow ditching her flowing locks in favour of this sharp cut as part of her sexy makeover.
How to get the look
This is all about moisturised and shiny locks so start by using a good nourishing shampoo such as Kérastase Bain Satin Shampoo and their Nutritive Lait Vital which you can use frequently on normal to dry hair as it doesn’t weigh the hair down from frequent application.
Blow Dry your hair flat onto your head with a paddle brush and then, using straightening irons, take small sections and using a fine tooth comb, straighten all your hair from root to tip.
For a slight bend in the ends, turn the irons in towards your face just before you reach the ends of your hair. On each section, finish with a light spray of brilliant shine by Aveda.
The Tousled Do
No one gives good hair quite like Cheryl Cole, whose mass of kinky locks is long, luscious and quite possibly has a postal address of their own.
This look may appear effortless but there is more to it than meets the eye with hot rollers an essential ingredient.
How to get the look
First, blow dry your hair upside down adding a medium hold product like Phomollient by Aveda, then brush through. Using either heated or Velcro rollers take small sections of hair starting at the front, at about 1 inch from the line of the hair. Spray with holding spray such as L’Oreal Elnette, and roll from the top down, starting at the ends and finishing at the roots, making sure the ends are smooth.
Put all your hair into the rollers and let cool or leave for about 20mins. Take the rollers out and your turn head upside down and gently shake out the curls.
Then run a small bit of Light Elements Smoothing Fluid or Brilliant Spray on Shine through the ends with your fingertips you can go over the fringe area with a round brush for a softer effect if desired.
Tip: For the rollers to really work, it is best for the hair not to be too soft so you can use a dry shampoo.
The Backcombed Pony
This style is a favourite of the retro-glam ladies such as Jennifer Lopez, who wore it perfectly at the recent 25th annual Night of Stars hosted by Fashion Group International at Cipriani Wall Street, New York.
This is style which is great on all ages, just add voluminous mascara or false lashes. JLo works it brilliantly in a modern one-shoulder dress.
How to get the look
Blow dry all the hair off the face and tie it into a high ponytail keeping your head up so you don't get any hair sagging at the back of the head,” explains Joy Hawkridge.“Then, using Aveda Air Control, spray the ponytail from a distance and backcomb the ponytail from the root to the mid lengths.
Take a bristle brush and brush the top of the ponytail gently till its smooth. Take the whole ponytail and pin it forward onto your head just in front of the area that's been tied up.
Once secured, flip the rest of the ponytail back again and roll under, pining as you go along - this will create the big roll on top of your head, bearing in mind you need to have quite long hair to achieve this look. You can however also use a hairpiece for your ponytail if you need extra length.
To finish, spray Air Control from a distance and with your hand gently smooth down any loose hairs.
