Costelloe’s Malthouse in Clonakilty is a mecca for ‘foodies’ - for the simple reason that the neighbouring farms provide award-winning artisan produce, while the crystal-clear waters off nearby Union Hall provide some of Europe’s most sought after seafood and shellfish.
Selectively choosing from such wonderful produce, and utilizing in-season, organically grown local ingredients, Chef Irene Collins creates menus that reward the discerning palate - whilst highlighting the individuality, and freshness, of the region’s fare. Aspects of her menus change on an almost daily basis, reflecting subtle seasonal alterations , and taking full advantage of what Mother Nature (and our wonderful suppliers!) has to offer.
With an emphasis on homemade sauces painstakingly designed to accompany her dishes, Irene creates memorable dining experiences at attractive prices - as the national, international and independent reviews contained on this site will attest…
Desserts from the Malt House include our chocolate fudge cake, Crème Brule, pear and almond tart and Rosscarbery strawberries, shortbread, Apple Pie, as well of course as our selection of local cheeses; Milleens, Durrus, Mossfield, Bandon Vale.
All our wines (we currently have 30 on our ever expanding-list, 14 of which we can serve by the glass, or, alternatively in 500ml carafes) are chosen from small producers, many of whom use organically grown grapes, and traditional methods of wine-making. We try to keep our prices competitive - for example, a nice crisp Pinot Grigio is just €19.00, while you can savour a splendid Chateau Lamarche Bordeaux Superieur (2008) for 22.00
Finally - our coffee is fair trade, organically grown, and we believe that after their meal, our customers deserve at least 1 free refill; in fact we are puzzled as to how that particular custom died out so quickly: One aspect of the ‘Tiger none of us will miss, eh?
