To the King of Spain; Your Lordships request

This is a letter from Hugh O'Neill and Ruairí O'Donnell to the king of Spain, Philip III. It was written on July 14th, 1608, shortly after they arrived in Rome. In this letter they are requesting the King to increase support for the Irish Regiment in the Spanish army of Flanders. The Spanish Council of State carried out their request. This shows that although they were in Rome the Earls still had influence. O'Neill's son Henry was Colonel of the Irish regiment at the time.
